Caelan had her first serious little injury. Her grandpa Sorensen got married a couple of weeks ago, so we went down to CA for the wedding. Then the kids and mom stayed in CA to help out for another week. After that we took quite the adventurous trip and flew over to AZ to see Grandpa and Grandma Dick. This is where the accident occurred. They have an old dog, Sandy. Caelan loves the dog, and Sandy has always been really good with Caelan. Well, one morning I (Mom) was talking on the phone with Dad (he had to go to NC for business the day after the wedding), and suddenly there was a loud bark and then Caelan was on the ground crying. Grandma Dick rushed over to her and noticed that there was blood on her face. She carried her back to Grandpa Dick (who was getting cleaned and ready for the day). I told Sean what we had just seen, but couldn't give him any other details (because at that point even I didn't know anything else). We said we would call him back. I went back to see her, and found that she had a pretty good gash mark on the top, right side of her lip (if you were looking at her). I was open pretty good. There were a couple other little cuts, but that was the big one. Well, Grandma and Grandpa have a doctor friend that just lives a few houses down, so we headed over there to see what he thought about the situation. We decided to go down to his office and try to put some butterfly bandages on it to keep it closed. Well, by the time we had driven back to Gma and Gpa's house, the bandages were already coming off Between the location of the cut, Caelan's runny nose and her fascination with these things on her lip, there was no way those little strips were going to stay on. So, we went back to do some stitches. Grandpa got a teeny little needle from his office to use to numb the area. The needle had a little leak in it, so it wasn't as effective as it should have been. Caelan did NOT like the situation at all. She screamed and cried. Grandpa and I had to basically hold her down while Doctor Fosdick tried to get the stitches in. It was very traumatic, and it was pretty hard to watch the whole thing as a Mom. Anyway, the stitches went in and we were done for the day... or so we thought. By the next day I had noticed that the knot on the top of the stitches was gone and the stitches were starting to come loose a little. So, on Monday we headed back to the doctor's office. At this visit, Caelan clutched on to me for dear life. She wouldn't even get on the scale to get weighed. The doctor called in a couple of nurses to help hold her down this time. He tried to retie the knot, but the strings were too short, so he decided to just super glue (that's right -apparently it is totally sanitary and safe) the end of the stitch down. As he did this, his finger got stuck to her face. He gently pried it off, and with it came some of the scabbed flesh. We decided that that was good enough -the wound would heal just fine. What an ordeal. I felt so bad for Muffy (Cae1an) -she was quite the trooper. The amazing thing was that it didn't really phase her at all with regard to Sandy. She was outside the next day trying to chase after her and pet her. She fully realized that she got her "big owie" from the dog, but that didn't freak her out. We were pretty happy about that -we didn't want one incident to scar her for life. Anyway, we took the stitches out about a week later when we had gotten back home to Utah. Grandpa was able to clip all of the stitches while she was sleeping one night, and the next day we had to pull them out (she wasn't too excited or thrilled about that), but the cut is looking good. The doctor said that we would probably notice the scar for a good year or so, but then it would fade away. Anyway, that was her first big accident ordeal. We hope we don't have too many more of those in the future, but if she takes after her Mom at all, we might as well get used to going to the doctor and hospitals for things like that.
